When speaking about automation, pictures of factories full of robots
performing tasks originally done by humans immediately come to mind.
This is not what this Skill is about, because manufacturing is not the
only area in which automation will radically change the way we work.
Automation of non-manufacturing business processes and “knowledge work”
is gathering pace too.
In this Skill, you will learn what
Automation@Scale is and how it will impact work as we know it today. You
will get insights into different automation technologies, ranging from
basic robotic process automation all the way to complex cognitive
agents. How to successfully implement an automation project and key
success factors to consider will also be discussed.
This Skill provides a basic understanding of the impact of automation technologies on work beyond the field of industrial production. Learners will gain knowledge about different types of technologies and their capabilities.
Target group
This Skill is relevant for “knowledge workers” (employees who do not work in industrial production) who need to understand the changes they will face in their daily work as well as the opportunities automation technologies will introduce to them.

In this chapter, we will introduce Automation@Scale. You will learn what we mean by “knowledge work” and how IT based systems can automate the
typical tasks in this area.
Automation Technologies
This Chapter discusses different automation technologies. You will learn about robotic process automation (RPA), smart workflows, machine learning & advanced analytics, natural language generation & processing, as well as about cognitive agents. You will also understand how these technologies work, how sophisticated they are, what typical use cases you can expect and which level of maturity each technology has reached.
Scenario: Which Technology Fits?
In this Challenge, you can show that you have understood which type of technology fits which kind of use cases.
Can You Spot the Bot?
In this Challenge, you can try to differentiate a text written by a human from a text written by a bot. Can you spot the difference?
How to Implement Automation@Scale
In this Chapter, you will learn how to implement an automation project and you will understand which key success factors to consider.
